The Cuban Sandwich is a typical Cuban stuffed sandwich, prepared with the traditional bread of the country and stuffed with a creamy filling made with meat, ham, and cheese. It is believed that initially, this exceptionally nutritious dish was the lunch of Cuban workers employed in cigar factories and sugar factories in Havana and Santiago de Cuba. The history of the Cuban sandwich soon saw it spread, albeit with different variations.
Notably, it also spread to the rest of America between the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, from Florida to the great metropolises, where it became one of the street food par excellence. In our version, we used a baguette stuffed with pork flavored with an inviting and spiced marinara, gherkins, and cooked ham. If you like street food, then you can’t miss the Cuban sandwich!

How To Prepare The Cuban Sandwich
Marinate The Meat
To prepare the Cuban sandwich, start making the marinade for the meat: squeeze a lemon and an orange. Then put the juice of both in a bowl with finely chopped fresh coriander.
Mix All The Ingredients For Roast
After that, mash the garlic with the back of a knife, then in the pan with the citrus juice pour the oil together with the chopped coriander and the garlic cloves. Thereafter, sprinkle the black pepper and add cumin, coarse salt and mix everything with a whisk or spoon.
Leave The Meat For Marinate
After that, place the pork loin in the bowl, and cover it with cling film and leave to marinate between 2 to 12 hours. Turn the meat from time to time, because the longer you marinate, the tastier your meat will be.
Thereafter, place the meat in a pan, wet it slightly with part of the marinade liquid and cook in a preheated static oven at 180°C for 40-45 minutes or at 160°C for 35-45 minutes. When the meat is cooked, take it out of the oven and let it cool altogether.
Cut The Meat And Edamer
Cut the pork loin and Edamer into thin slices, using a slicer (alternatively, you can cut it by hand, trying to make slices as flat as possible). Notably, you can also cut the cucumbers into 3-4 mm thick slices.
Make Slices Of Bread And Toast It
Firstly, divide the baguette into half with a saw knife. Thereafter, brush the crumb with the melted butter on both sides and put on the heat to heat a grill or a plate. Finally, toast the baguette for 2 minutes, turning it from both sides.
Grill The Meat
Spread the mustard on both sides, then lightly grill the pork loin slices for a few moments. At this point you can proceed with the composition of the sandwich: lay the loin slices.
Fill The sandwich
Place the cooked ham, the sliced cheese and finally the cucumbers in between the bread slices, distributing them side by side. Consequently, close the sandwich, and pass it again on the hot plate for 2 minutes on each side, . This makes it crisp and melts the cheese. Once ready, cut each Cuban sandwich in half and serve.
Tips For Cuban Sandwich
Prepare the pork roast the day before and keep it in the refrigerator, because the cold roast will be easier to cut.
